UNIABUJA Opens Admission For 2025 Postgraduate Programmes In Creative Writing
The University of Abuja (UNIABUJA) has begun accepting applications for its professional postgraduate programmes in Creative Writing for the 2024/2025 academic session.
These programmes are offered through the Centre for Creative Writing, a hub established in March 2023 to nurture and refine creative talent across Nigeria and the African continent.
Available Programmes
UNIABUJA’s Centre for Creative Writing provides a structured academic path for aspiring and established writers, offering three distinct postgraduate options:
- Postgraduate Diploma in Creative Writing (PGD)
- Master’s Degree in Creative Writing (MA)
- Doctorate Degree in Creative Writing (PhD)
Specialised Courses
Students will have access to a diverse range of specialised courses designed to enhance their creative and professional writing skills. These include:
- Narrative Fiction Writing
- Non-Fiction Writing
- Creative Writing for Cinematic Dramaturgy
- Creative Writing and Nigerian Feminism
- Creative Writing Production
- Professional Writing
- Video-Game Narrative
- Creative Writing in Film Studies
- Publishing Writing
- Poetry Writing
- Screenwriting
Admission Requirements
PGD and MA Programmes
To qualify for the Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) or Master’s Degree (MA) in Creative Writing, applicants must:
- Hold a BA or BSc degree from a recognised university with a minimum GPA of 3.0 and at least 60% in research work.
- Have studied a related field such as English, Literature, Theatre Arts, Linguistics, Journalism, Mass and Public Communication, History, Art History, Religious Studies, Philosophy, or Education.
- Candidates with degrees in Social Sciences or HND holders may also be considered, provided they submit a writing portfolio and complete any required remedial coursework.
PhD Programme
For those pursuing a Doctorate in Creative Writing, the requirements include:
- A Master of Arts (MA) or Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Creative Writing from a recognised university.
- A minimum GPA of 3.0 and 60% in research work.
- A postgraduate degree in a related field may also be accepted, though remedial coursework might be necessary for applicants with a PGD background.
Programme Duration
- PGD: 8 months
- MA: 2 years
- PhD: 3–4 years
