FG Renames University Of Abuja (UNIABUJA) To Yakubu Gowon University
The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved renaming the University of Abuja (UNIABUJA) in honor of former military head of state, General Yakubu Gowon.
This announcement was made on Monday by the Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, following the FEC meeting chaired by President Bola Tinubu.
Decision to Honor Yakubu Gowon
The decision reflects the government’s recognition of General Gowon’s contributions to Nigeria’s unity and development.
Mohammed Idris explained that the institution will now bear the name Yakubu Gowon University, symbolizing a tribute to his legacy.
However, this change is not immediate. According to Idris, the renaming must undergo legislative approval in the National Assembly before it becomes official.
He stated:
“The third item is that there is also a decision taken by the Federal Executive Council to rename the University of Abuja to honour elder statesman, General Yakubu Gowon.
“The University of Abuja will, henceforth, be called Yakubu Gowon University.
“Of course, the process will have to go to the National Assembly for all legislative work in that direction, but FEC has taken that decision to write to the National Assembly to change the name of the University of Abuja.”

Founded in 1988, the University of Abuja was established as a dual-mode institution, offering both conventional academic programs and distance learning opportunities. It was the first of its kind in Nigeria to integrate this dual mandate from its inception.
Over the years, UNIABUJA has grown into a major educational hub with nine faculties, including a College of Health Sciences, a School of Remedial Studies, and a Centre for Distance Learning. It also houses an Institute of Education and a robust School of Postgraduate Studies.

With this renaming, the government hopes to inspire future generations by linking the institution’s identity to a leader who played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s history.
Once the National Assembly completes the legislative process, Yakubu Gowon University will officially emerge as a beacon of education and unity.
