The Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) is gearing up for an extraordinary double celebration.

The combined 34th and 35th convocation ceremonies will honor the achievements of graduates from both the 2022/2023 and 2023/2024 academic sessions.

FUTA Convocation Details:

Set to take place on Friday, 29th November and Saturday, 30th November, 2024, this momentous occasion will showcase the hard work and dedication of over 6,500 graduates.

The event will be presided over by the Chancellor, HRH Alhaji Umar Farouk II, Emir of Katagum, whose presence adds prestige to this grand event.

Celebrating the Best and Brightest

FUTA’s convocation is not just a ceremony but a celebration of excellence. Over 500 graduates will receive first-class honors, setting the stage for an impressive acknowledgment of academic brilliance. Among these, three students will be named valedictorians for their outstanding performances across the two academic years.

Best Graduating Students:

• 2022/2023: Ifeoluwa Faith Faromika (Electrical and Electronics Engineering) and Johnbull Anuoluwapo Vitowanu (Industrial and Production Engineering) both earned a remarkable CGPA of 4.96.
• 2023/2024: Oluwasegun Joshua Ajakaye (Metallurgical and Materials Engineering) followed closely with a CGPA of 4.95.

Graduate Breakdown:

The convocation will honor students across various academic categories:

• First Class: 519 students
• Second Class Upper: 3,408 students
• Second Class Lower: 2,139 students
• Third Class: 339 students

Additionally, 1,280 postgraduate students will also be conferred degrees, including:

• Postgraduate Diplomas: 344 students
• Master’s Degrees: 756 students
• Doctorate Degrees: 180 students

Convocation Lecture

The convocation lecture, titled “Technological Innovations: A Panacea for Food Insecurity”, will be delivered by Honourable Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, Minister of Interior, on Friday, 29th November 2024. This lecture promises to offer insightful perspectives on how technological advancements can address one of the world’s most pressing issues.

Honoring Distinguished Individuals

As part of the celebrations, FUTA will award honorary doctorate degrees to three individuals for their exceptional contributions to the university and society at large:

• Professor Daniel Kolawole Olukoya: Doctor of Management Science (Honoris Causa)
• Mr Joel Ogunsola: Doctor of Information and Communication Technology (Honoris Causa)
• Mr Ayorinde Olurinde Ogunruku: Doctor of Management Science (Honoris Causa)

Emeritus Professors

In recognition of their immense contributions to academia, three professors will be bestowed with the prestigious title of Emeritus Professor:

• Professor Adebisi Balogun (Emeritus Professor of Fish Nutrition and Agricultural Biochemistry)
• Professor Akin Laseinde (Emeritus Professor of Animal Production and Health)
• Professor Labunmi Lajide (Emeritus Professor of Organic and Medical Chemistry)

FUTA’s Achievements

FUTA continues to carve a name for itself in the global academic arena:

• Top Five in Global Space Competition: The CanSat FUTA team made history as the first African university team to participate in the renowned event, organized by the American Astronautical Society.
• National Accreditation: In 2023, 18 programs were granted full accreditation by the National Universities Commission (NUC), solidifying the university’s commitment to high academic standards. With a total of 59 fully accredited programs, FUTA maintains its position as a leading academic institution.

Event Preparations

Professor Eunice Adeparusi, Chairman of the Ceremonials Committee, reassured attendees that thorough arrangements have been made to ensure the event runs smoothly. From security to traffic management, every detail has been carefully planned to guarantee a seamless experience for all.

In her address, Professor Adenike Oladiji, Vice-Chancellor of FUTA, reaffirmed the institution’s unwavering commitment to excellence. She expressed optimism for FUTA’s future, particularly in teaching, research, and community service, and promised that under her leadership, the university will reach new heights.
